Orthotic Clinic

Appletree Medical Group offers gait assessments covered by OHIP and custom fitted orthotics!

If you are suffering from foot, knee or lower back pain, flat feet, bunions or plantar fasciitis, orthotics can help. 75% of people will suffer from foot related problems at some point in their life.

The foot is a complex structure made up of more than 26 bones, 33 joints (20 of which are actively articulated), and more than a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments. As a result of their intrinsic structure, the feet are vulnerable to injuries. Foot pain that interferes with your normal activities is an indication that something is wrong and that you should seek medical help.

A custom orthotic is a device designed to align the foot and ankle into the most anatomically efficient position. They look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Custom orthotics work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes - they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. The plastic body of the custom orthotic helps to re-align the foot by redirecting and reducing certain motion that takes place during the gait cycle. Custom orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole - and they have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet.

There are many causes of foot pain. Acute or abnormal strain is one of the most common causes of foot pain:

• Running
• Weight gain
• Injuries
• Arthritis
• Poor shoe selection
• Prolonged standing
• Age-related changes
• Calluses and skin problems Arthritis

Certain medical conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, spinal problems, leg deformities, neurological disorders, pregnancy, obesity and medications can cause foot pain. Other lifestyle choices can also cause a person foot disturbances. These include wearing ill-fitting shoes or high heels and doing high impact exercise such as jogging or strenuous exercise.

Heel problems:
• Achilles tendonitis
• Heel spurs
• Plantar fasciitis

Arch problems:
• Flat feet
• High arches
• Overuse

Forefoot problems:
• Metatarsalgia
• Bunions
• Arthritis

Orthotics varies in cost and is usually covered by employee health plans, private insurance and social assistance. When you book your appointment, the first step is to identify the specific cause of your foot pain. Next, a digital scan is taken of your feet while walking. Gait analysis produces an accurate map of your foot pressure distribution and identifies problematic patterns. This technology allows us to calculate and measure where support is needed in order to restore proper foot mechanics. Once the appropriate orthotics is chosen, your prescription is sent to the lab for fabrication. Whether for sport, casual, or dress shoes, turnaround time is approximately 3 weeks. A follow-up fitting will be scheduled to ensure the orthotics fit correctly.
